The arguments of Hinister of Communications and of
Kinister for Foreign Affairs were again used by Prime Minister
Thereupon I asked him to let me have by February 7th a satis-
factory and categorical reply - saying that whether it were
a holiday or not if I did not have it I should ask President to
grant me an audience.
As I was aware that contract had been signed and was now
awaiting approval in United States I would not listen to the
excuses he made that the two departments concerned could not
give an answer by then; in the end he promised to let me lave
the answer by that date.
Today the Prime Minister has sent an expression of regret
that I could have thought for an instant that his Goverment
would break their word with († President). He adds that
Kinister of Communications had received instructions from him
that American contract was to be held up until a careful
examination had been made of the whole position he also said
United States Legation had given him to understand that United
States Government and British Embassy at Washington were
discussing the matter,

I should like to suggest that His Majesty's Embassy and
Marconi Company take up the matter with Federal Company. in
Washington as soon as possible in order to make discussions
between my American colleagues and myself here more easy.
In order to make inquiries asked for in last paragraph
of your telegram I have asked for another interview with
Minister of Commumications as soon as possible.
